Dry Sauna Info 101. In a dry sauna, the temperature ranges from 60 degrees Celsius to more than 100 degrees Celsius. In a wet sauna, the temperature is lower but feels equally hot.
As a sauna is not as steamy as a Turkish bath, one sometimes hears the term "dry sauna." This does not mean the air in the sauna should be dry. Entirely dry, hot air is potentially damaging to one's respiratory system. The true Finnish sauna always includes loyly. Although splashing water on the rocks first causes a surge of hot steam from the heater, it eventually cools down the sauna. Also, a more humid sauna will induce more sweating.

Sauna Rocks Info. The best sauna rocks are those least exposed to weather. Certain quarried rocks are, therefore, the strongest. Glassy rocks of high quartz or iron content are not recommended. One of the best sauna rocks is peridotite, a quarried Finnish rock. Certain North American rocks work as well. Freshly quarried basalt, black and fine grained, from the Cascade and Sierra ranges is excellent. So is hornblende, a texturized rock that has been re-crystallized at a high temperature. Vihta Info. The vihta, or vasta, is the thick bunch of young, tender birch twigs used to flagellate or slap on oneself to promote blood circulation and cleanse the skin while in a sauna. The vihta is not used as a whip and is not supposed to hurt; it is intended to make the skin tingle for a while. It's important for the vihta to have many leaves, as they make the slapping softer and more pleasant. Heater Guard Info. The purpose of the heater guard is to prevent sauna bathers from making physical contact with the hot surfaces of the sauna's heater.

Sauna Floor Info. A sauna must have a waterproof floor so that it can be easily kept clean, sanitary, and free of odor. Concrete, tile, and heavy-duty vinyl floors are recommended. While floor drains are convenient for cleaning, most saunas today do not have them, as very little water is used in the dry sauna heat. A floor drain could be of benefit if the sauna is in close proximity to a swimming pool.
